Painting of decorative plaster: the necessary materials and methods of application

Decorative plaster is a dry powder mixture of gray or white. When applied to the walls, it dries and becomes a uniform white tone, which is an excellent base coat for decorating the surface. Revive the interior or architecture of the building will help painting decorative plaster by introducing colors of various shades.

What paint to choose

First of all, you need to pay attention to the purpose of the paint - distinguish between materials for interior and exterior decoration. For example, the facades are decorated with stucco with a single hue. The color range of paints for exterior decoration is different; material based on acrylic, silicone or silicate is used.

Such compositions form a strong film layer, are characterized by increased moisture resistance and resistance to ultraviolet rays, which means that they will not fade in the sun for a long time and will be resistant to atmospheric precipitation and temperature changes. In addition, these materials are distinguished by good vapor permeability, due to which the walls do not remain wet, do not get wet, they do not start fungus and mold, adversely affecting the human body.

Mostly white facade paints are produced, into which pigment substances can be added during decoration. The consumption of paint and varnish material on facade plaster with a textured surface will be higher than for processing smooth areas by about 15-20%.

Paints for interior decoration are divided into the following types:

All of these types are easy to apply, they can be used for smooth and embossed surfaces. Materials are applied with a roller or spray gun, the walls become dull after drying. Latex compositions, unlike aqueous emulsion and acrylic, can be applied to gypsum and cement surfaces, pre-treated with a primer.

Choose a dye

In some cases, it is more advisable not to paint over the plastered surface, but to apply decorative plaster with a selected shade. For this, pigment dye is added directly to the plaster mixture.

Tinting should be done on the entire composition immediately - otherwise it will be difficult to choose the same shade for re-preparation of the composition. For example, for cement plaster, you can use any concrete dye, and for a polymer mixture it is recommended to use acrylic-based color.

A simple way is to add universal dye to the stucco mixture.

When purchasing plaster dyes, it is recommended to pay attention to the packaging label, which will indicate what kind of work the color is intended for (interior or exterior), what type of plaster (for concrete, polymer, gypsum, cement).

Decorative plaster painting

Before applying the dyeing compositions, the surface should be prepared: remove dust, residual impurities, putty in separate areas. When applying decorative plaster to obtain smooth walls, the surface is additionally sanded. If you plan to create a structural surface, then you can start immediately processing the primer with a mortar - it will increase the adhesion forces of the coloring materials to the main layer.

For painting, you will need rollers with a pile of various lengths and made of different materials (foam rubber, rubber, cloth with special nozzles), a sponge, soft cloth, a paint tray, and paint brushes of different sizes. For painting large areas, it is recommended to use a spray gun.

Applying paint to the surface with your own hands can be done in several ways:

  • in 1 color
  • in 2 shades,
  • dry brushing
  • creation of venetian plaster.

Also, with decorative plaster, you can change the shade by highlighting it.

In one color

This method of coloring is considered the simplest. The work is carried out in 2 stages, followed by shading the excess and fixing the decorative layer.

The technology for applying the dye is as follows:

  1. The prepared solution is placed evenly on the wall surface. Grooves and reliefs on the structural surface should be carefully stained, rolling the roller.
  2. After complete drying, the paint is fixed with varnish.

The scheme of staining with a roller - up-down movement, vertical stripes are applied with an overlap until complete shading. For a more uniform application of the coloring material, it is recommended to use a spray gun.

Two shades

This method is suitable for embossed surfaces when it is necessary to highlight protruding parts. The technology of work is also simple, the implementation goes in 3 stages:

  1. A basic coating is applied to the surface to be painted - it will also be the background, the main. The coloring material should be applied in a thick layer, evenly rolling out with a roller.
  2. After the coating has dried, a second shade is applied using a sponge - the paint should be left only on the protruding (embossed) sections of the wall, the depressions should have a basic color.
  3. The final step is to apply the varnish to the topcoat.

Two shades can be obtained by tinting, adding a pigment dye to the soil for the background color, and treat the protruding areas with a contrasting color.

Dry brush technique

This method is similar to the method of applying two shades, the difference lies in the materials used. After covering with a background color, the surface is not left to dry, but contrasting shades are immediately applied with a brush.

A brush should capture a minimal amount of paint, so that with light strokes it can produce strokes on the protruding parts of the relief surface, painting them in a different color. As contrasting colors are used sequins, bronze, gold, silver.

Removing paint to brighten

The work is carried out in two colors only on a relief surface, with the presence of chaotic depressions and protrusions.

This method decorates indoor surfaces. The purpose of decoration is to highlight areas of depressions, in contrast to the 2-color painting technique. The whole process is carried out in 3 stages:

  1. On the plastered walls put a dye of the same shade. For this purpose, water-based paint is used, with which the treated area is coated.
  2. Sponge moistened with water is carried out over the painted area - so almost all paint is washed off, there are only places of depressions on the surface.
  3. After drying, the coating, having a pale shade, is fixed with a top coat of varnish.

The protrusions of embossed areas can be additionally covered with a different shade of color using a brush or sponge.

Another option for highlighting is simpler. To do this, the plastered surface is painted completely in a plain color. After drying (in a day), all the protruding parts are removed with a grinder. The effect of attrition on the treated area is obtained.

Venetian stucco effect

Wall decoration in an apartment in the style of Venetian plaster is an imitation of natural stone: granite, marble, malachite. To create a high-quality decorative coating, stone chips are used, which is quite an expensive finishing material. As an analogue, you can use gypsum plaster, painted in the desired shade, and fixing coatings.

The technology for creating Venetian plaster is as follows:

  1. The surface is prepared for coating: dust, dirt, cracks and defects are putty removed.
  2. Then the treated area is painted in the base (background) color. For this, a roller with a long pile and a narrow brush for hard-to-reach spots are used.
  3. After drying, a decorative color is applied: bronze, gilding, metallic, silver. To do this, use a small short-hair or foam roll. The application of metallic luster should be done with light movements, rolling the roller with minimal pressure - so that the background coating is visible.
  4. The final stage is fixing the decorative coating. For this purpose, water-based varnish is used, additionally diluted with water (its volume should be no more than 30% of the main) and mixed with sparkles at the rate of 1 tsp. per 1 liter of solution. Dilution with water is required to prevent crusting on the plaster. The resulting solution covers the entire plaster with a foam roller.

One of the inexpensive “metallic” coatings is aluminum powder, the metallic effect of which can be obtained by diluting the powder with a ground solution in a 1: 1 ratio.

Additional compositions for processing decorative plaster

These include materials such as:

How to use them, you can see in the video instructions for applying coloring and fixing compositions.

Varnish is a topcoat that performs the fixing properties of decorative painting. It is in demand due to its transparency and glossy gloss, has good protective properties: strength, moisture resistance, resistance to minor mechanical damage. In addition, the varnished surface looks more aesthetically pleasing and fits well into any interior.

There are varnishes for indoor and outdoor use - water-based acrylic-based compounds are used in the rooms, materials with organic solvents are used to process the facade walls as the main component.

In addition, the shade of varnish can be repainted, changing to any other. For this purpose, before applying to the plaster, a pigment dye is introduced into the composition, the solution is thoroughly mixed and applied in 1 layer to the surface to be treated. For work, a sponge or foam roller is used.

In addition to glossy, compositions with a matte effect are produced. Separately produced materials with the effect of cracks. If desired, glitter can be added to the varnish.

Wax for processing plaster performs a protective function and at the same time can be a decorative coating. The following types of wax are distinguished:

Smooth and embossed walls are treated with liquid wax, for which a soft cloth is used. The composition is carefully applied with strokes and shaded. Gel wax should be applied with a rubber spatula, rubbing over the entire surface. Synthetic wax is water-repellent and resistant to temperature extremes, has a strong matte finish.

The hue of the wax can be changed by adding pigment substances and sparkles, but it is recommended to use the entire composition immediately, periodically mixing the material, since the particles of additives settle to the bottom of the jar with the mixture. The coating dries up within 4 hours - during this time defects and irregularities can be fixed, after which the coating solidifies and becomes durable and difficult to remove. Wax consumption is from 50 to 80 g / m² per layer.

Glaze, or glaze, is a topcoat for paints and varnishes. It has a translucent texture, is applied both on a smooth and on a relief surface. It can be used for interior and exterior wall decoration.

The coating technology is applied to the features of the glaze - the composition is used at a temperature of + 10 ° C, applied using a special mitten. Cover the surface with parts, small strokes, the joints should be shaded immediately after application.

Tinting

Decorative plaster, sold as a dry mixture, has a white or gray color. You can color it immediately when mixing with water. To do this, use tinting aqueous solutions or pastes, which are added directly to the container with plaster. The amount of color depends on the desired color saturation. Addition occurs with constant stirring. This is the easiest way to paint decorative plaster, used to obtain the base color of the walls.

Tinting has its advantages over surface painting in that subsequently scratches and chips of plaster will be less noticeable.

What paints to choose

Painting of decorative plaster completes the repair work and allows you to create a unique individual design. In addition, the paint coating creates an additional protective layer.

For decorating facades often choose plastering like "bark beetle", "fur coat", "American". This textured plaster is often painted in one color. You can choose acrylic, silicate or silicone paint. These types of moisture resistant, suitable for outdoor use, have a wide color gamut. They also have good vapor permeability, unlike oil and alkyd paints.

Facade paints after drying, they create a durable film on the surface of the plaster that is resistant to atmospheric precipitation and temperature extremes. They are sold more often than white and tinted in accordance with the manufacturer's shade table. The consumption of textured plaster is slightly different. For example, for acrylic paint it will be 0.17 - 0.2 kg / m2 when applied in one layer. For silicate - 0.15 - 0.3 l / m2

For interior work water-based paint is suitable. It can be painted with decorative plaster either manually with a roller or brush, or with a spray gun. Walls become dull after staining.

Acrylic paints for repairs inside the house are also popular. They are suitable for rooms with high humidity, such as a kitchen or bathroom. Wear resistance is better than that of an aqueous emulsion, therefore, often an acrylic coating is used to protect decorative plaster in the corridor.

The properties of latex paints are very similar to acrylic, they are also quite versatile, easily fit on any surface, including gypsum and cement base.

Which of these paints is better to paint decorative plaster is not fundamentally from a technical point of view, you can choose any colors and shades. Therefore, when choosing customers often focus on the cost of the material. If you select a cover for the facade, then look for the appropriate markings on the bank.

Dry brush technique

The first tone is covered similarly to the previous method. The second and subsequent colors are applied with a brush to the protruding parts only by slightly touching them. The essence of the technique is that with a brush they capture very little paint. In this case, there is no uniform coloring of the surface, only the very tops of the relief. The second tone is usually chosen lighter than the first. It can be coated with gold, bronze, silver or glitter.

Wax, varnish and glaze compounds

Wax applied to create an additional decorative and water-repellent coating. Suitable for all types of plaster, especially for Venetian and imitation stone. The result is a brighter shade and a beautiful shine.

Varieties of wax:

Liquid wax used for both embossed and smooth walls. It is applied with a soft cloth. Gel-like - with a rubber spatula. Natural wax is a beekeeping product, it is rarely used for decoration. A product made of synthetic materials is not susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity. The surface is durable and matte.

This type of wall treatment can be transparent or colored. Before applying, make sure that there is no dust on the wall. The coating work is carried out non-stop. Within four hours, you can still fix the flaws. Material consumption 50-80 gr per 1 m2.

Read more about decorative wax, recipes for its preparation and application, see our article.

Lacquer - The finish coating, which strengthens the surface of the plaster, protects it from mechanical damage, moisture, and most importantly, improves the appearance of the decorated walls. For interior decoration use water-soluble acrylic varnishes, for the facade - on organic solvents.

Before applying the varnish is mixed, if desired, add a pigment (color) or glitter. Walls are covered in a single layer using a soft foam roll.

Types of varnish: matte, glossy, with the effect of creole (cracks).

Glazing composition, or glaze - translucent topcoat for paint. Apply on a flat or textured surface. Suitable for exterior and interior use. The composition is applied at a temperature not lower than + 10˚C. Cover with a sponge or a special mitten. The entire surface is visually divided into squares and the composition is applied in stages by brush strokes, blending the joints. Glazing composition turns out to make a beautiful color transition.

Is it possible to paint decorative plaster

There are smooth coatings - Venetian, Moroccan decorative plaster, and there are textured ones - characterized by the volume of the pattern. Venetian and Moroccan plasters already have a coating created during the manufacture of the coating. In this case, it is not necessary to paint decorative plaster in a different color. In painting usually need textured.

Typically, the stucco mortar is stained before use by adding various pigments to the mortar. You can also purchase ready-made mixtures of the selected color. Painting is another way to color plastered walls. Decorative plaster is a finishing material that easily accepts other coatings - varnishes, waxes and paints. Naturally, so that the paint applied to the plastered surface lays evenly, does not tear off, holds firmly, does not crack, does not fade and retains its appearance for a long time, you need to use suitable colorful compositions and follow certain rules.

Decorative plaster paint

Coloring compositions are produced on a different basis and are divided by area of application into:

These two classes of paints and varnishes are distinguished by "tolerance" to the conditions in which they have to serve.

Compositions for outdoor conditions must withstand temperature extremes, the effects of showers, hail, wind, solar ultraviolet radiation and reliably protect the plaster layer from them.

For facade work well suited:

  1. moisture resistant acrylic,
  2. very elastic durable silicone,
  3. highly washable silicate.

They delight with the richness of the palette, allow the walls to breathe and serve for a long time, forming a durable film coating. Most often, commercially available facade colorful compositions have a white color, which can be easily changed to the desired color scheme.

For painting rooms inside, paints are suitable:

  • based on a water-based dispersion (require two-layer application, form a matte film),
  • acrylic (a water-soluble composition of copolymers - vinyl, silicone and styrene is able to tolerate frosts to -30 ° C without cracking). There are three types: glossy, special and glyphthal. The most popular are glyphthalic, containing acrylic resin,
  • latex (do not contain the above copolymers), water-soluble on latex binders. Dry faster than acrylic, but have the disadvantages that they lack. They are afraid of sudden temperature changes, have features in the application, less durable, but much cheaper than acrylic.

In order not to confuse latex and acrylic paints when buying, you need to pay attention to the percentage composition of acrylic. It should be like this: 100% acrylic latex.

Tools

The chosen tool also depends on the chosen technique for applying the paint layer.

The following tools and accessories may be needed:

  • brushes (of various shapes and sizes - flute, malkovy, long-nosed),
  • rollers (with different fur coats for different surfaces, taking into account the depth of the relief grooves),
  • foam sponges,
  • spray gun (for painting surfaces with a large area),
  • masking tape (to limit the area to be painted and to protect adjacent ones),
  • trays for coloring compounds,
  • mixer,
  • scaffolding for facade painting, or a stepladder
  • capacities
  • rags.

Surface preparation for painting

The dried plastered wall must be properly prepared before painting.

This is done for several purposes:

  • reduce material consumption by clogging the pores of the decorative coating,
  • to ensure the coordinated work of colorful and plaster coatings,
  • create the conditions for the correct lining of varnish or paint, which ensures high quality and long service of the finish layer.

The surface of the painted walls must be cleaned of dust and small pellets remaining as a result of plastering. If the walls are smooth with a mild relief, they can be cleaned with a sponge or rag.

With a more pronounced relief, these funds are not enough. Better to use a vacuum cleaner.

The dust-free wall must be primed. Thereby:

  1. cheaper than paint primer fill numerous pores of the plaster coating,
  2. the roughness is formed, which is necessary for greater adhesion (adhesion) of the wall and the colorful film,
  3. the adhesive of the primer additionally fastens the surface of the plaster and protects against possible cracking.

Since the work is related to coloring matter, measures must be taken to protect the floor and nearby sections of walls, platbands, window sills and the ceiling from drops and colorful strokes. The floor is covered with a film, adjacent sections of the wall are sealed with masking tape.

How to paint your own decorative plaster

Based on the texture of the decorative coating, as well as the desired result of the painting, you can apply one of several ways:

  1. painting the wall in one color,
  2. two-color staining,
  3. using a dry brush
  4. lightening by removing paint,
  5. creating the effect of the Venetian.

All of these methods are easy enough to learn. Using them, you can paint the walls with your own hands. Further about each of the methods in more detail.

How to repaint decorative plaster

If you decide to modify the interior, and you need to change the color of decorative plaster, then this is not difficult to do if you do not need to remove the old coating. Then it is enough to paint the walls with a white primer based on acrylic. The texture of the decorative plaster will be preserved, and it can be painted in one of the above ways.

Do not forget to make a trial color to choose the right color.

If it is necessary to make brighter from a dark Venetian, then it is covered with white pearl glaze having an acrylic base. After drying, the glaze becomes half transparent. Through it, the former Venetian is visible.

If the old coating is not suitable, it is removed after wetting and keeping it moist for a while. If it is possible to use a steam generator, then the task will be much easier. After removing the old coating and priming, the surface of the wall is dried before a new painting.

In cases where not one of the above methods is suitable, you will have to resort to mechanical removal of the coating using abrasive materials (skins, brushes, special tools). In this case, the probability of damage to the main layer of plaster is high.

One of the final coatings for painting decorative plaster is wax. It protects the plaster finish from moisture and increases its decorativeness, giving shine and enhancing the brightness of tones. Tinted waxes can change the colors of the Venetian or Moroccan, tint the recesses of the embossed surface. Wax formulations come with natural wax or synthetic. There are different ways of waxing. Depending on the consistency and texture of the coating, the wax is applied with a rubber spatula, sponge or soft cloth. The wax film can be adjusted within four hours after application.

Another final coating that strengthens the plaster surface, protects it from moisture and mechanical damage, is varnish. It makes the appearance of the decorated walls more advantageous, giving it a semi-gloss or mirror shine. For interior decoration use acrylic water-soluble varnishes. Lacquer compositions based on organic solvents are used for facades. The main types of varnishes used (in terms of decorative qualities): giving a persistent mirror gloss, forming a soft-matte surface, craquelure varnish (for artificially creating cracks).

Before use in the varnish compositions, you can add glitters or the necessary pigments. Be sure to mix. Varnish is applied with a brush, sponge or foam roller in one layer.

The given methods for painting plaster can be varied and combined. Thus, you will get new effects. You can strictly adhere to these technologies. In any case, a fantasy place can always be found. A house painted with your own hands is always nicer and sweeter to the heart.

The advantages of decorative compositions

Plastered and painted walls have many advantages. All this is due to the quality characteristics of decorative compositions. Such decorative decoration is:

  1. handsomely. Plaster takes on an attractive, aesthetic appearance. For painting walls, you can use absolutely any color, combine shades to get the desired effect.
  2. Reliably. The service life of the decorative finish is quite long. This cladding is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, as it is resistant to various types of exposure.
  3. Safely. The compounds are made from environmentally friendly raw materials, therefore they are absolutely harmless to humans.

Decorative plaster is easily painted, which allows you to change its appearance if necessary.

Structural Compositions

Structural plaster contains granules or other particles in the composition, which make it possible to achieve the necessary texture. Depending on the filler used, in turn, its subspecies are distinguished, for example, bark beetle, fur coat plaster or rain. The size of the granules and their type affects the final result, but the method of applying the composition is also of great importance. For this, various devices are used: rollers, stencils, special dies, etc.

In the modern market, structural compounds are usually sold in gray or white. Using the tint, you can give the desired shade. Plaster painting can be done independently. Depending on the chosen technology, it is possible to achieve a deep bright color or discreet and calm.

Venetian plaster

Textured formulations contain particles of natural origin. It is at the expense of them that it is possible to obtain the effect of amber, malachite, jade, etc. The walls look as if decorated with plates. A special application technique helps to make the effect brighter.

Typically, the plaster already has the desired shade. Also, painting the textured plaster can be done with your own hands. This will allow you to achieve an unusual color or emphasize individual details.

Chemical composition

Decorative plaster can be made on the basis of minerals or polymers. Depending on the chemical composition, the following categories of polymer mixtures are distinguished:

  1. Silicone. Ideal for exterior decoration. They are distinguished by high water repellent ability, resistance to weathering, have a long period of operation. Moreover, their cost is also quite high.
  2. Acrylic Blends. Universal option for interior and exterior decoration. Well tolerate exposure to ultraviolet radiation and moisture. Moreover, they relate to materials of the middle price category.
  3. Vinyl. Provide maximum protection of the plaster from the development of pathogens. Resistant to moisture and sunlight.

There are oil and alkyd compounds on the market. They have lost their popularity due to the fact that they provide poor vapor permeability and do not allow accumulated moisture to go outside.

In the composition of mineral mixtures, usually either cement or gypsum is present. Depending on the raw material, the color of the finishing material will differ. If cement mortars are often used for exterior decoration, then gypsum ones are suitable only for interior decoration, since they do not tolerate dampness.

How to choose the right paint

The choice of coloring matter depends on where it is used.

Indoor and outdoor work require the use of various materials:

  1. Plaster painting on the facade is usually carried out using acrylic, silicate and silicone coloring compounds. With their help, it is possible to give an attractive appearance, while ensuring reliable protection of the walls from atmospheric influences. Such paint is sold mainly in white color, give the desired shade by adding color. The facades are often painted in the same color, sometimes resorting to combination.
  2. Painting of decorative plaster indoors is often performed using water-based compositions. They are applied in two layers to paint the walls in the same color without drops and stains. If you want to paint the plaster in the bathroom or in the kitchen, where the humidity is quite high, then it is more rational to use acrylic or latex paint.

In some situations, the incompatibility of the coloring composition and the base is possible, so the paint should be selected taking into account the type of decorative plaster that was used during the decoration.

Overview of popular manufacturers

On the modern market there are many manufacturers of paints and varnishes. Usually in the line of companies there are several types of paints, including for painting plaster. The most popular manufacturers today are:

Tikkurila. The products of this brand are distinguished by their operational characteristics. Paints have good vapor permeability, are not susceptible to ultraviolet and pollution, absolutely safe.

The only negative is the high cost of production.

Belinka. The Slovenian brand has an impeccable reputation and is constantly introducing new technologies. Automation of the production process makes it possible to produce products of the same color in each batch.

Strict requirements for the preparation of walls are considered a nuance of the use of the manufacturer's paints, since if they are violated, delamination of the compositions from the base is possible.

Finncolor. It has a long service life without changing external qualities.

Resists adverse weather effects and is not subject to the development of fungus and mold, therefore, maintains high technical and aesthetic indicators.

Alpina. Often used when painting decorative plaster, because it is very easy to use.

It allows you to achieve the perfect color of the surface, repels moisture, does not interfere with the escape of steam from the inside, is not prone to the formation of pathogenic microorganisms.

Dulux. The brand is known all over the world. It offers the richest palette of shades, among which it is easy to find the suitable option.

It is distinguished by the ideal quality of the European level, which is confirmed by the relevant documentation and checks.

There are many other domestic and foreign manufacturers offering their products. Before you decide, it is worthwhile to carefully study all the characteristics of the paints, as well as the reviews and reputation of the manufacturer.

How to calculate the flow rate

The correct calculation of the paint material is a guarantee of savings. This indicator depends on many factors. First of all, it is worth noting that each type of paint and varnish materials has a specific consumption:

  • 1 liter acrylic paint on 8 m²,
  • 1 liter emulsion composition for 8-18 m²
  • 1 liter oil on 10-20 m².

This is the maximum indicator that is rarely achieved. It mainly reduces the quality of the painted surface. Consumption is indicated for perfectly smooth walls. Structural plaster will require more paint. Its consumption can be reduced by using not a roller and brush, but a spray gun.

An important nuance in calculating the flow rate is also the density of the paint. If the composition is too thick, it is recommended to dilute it slightly with a special solution. Given these points and knowing the surface area, you can easily determine how much paint is needed to paint the plaster.

Wall painting: choose tools

All necessary devices should be prepared first. If everything is at hand, the painting process will be much faster. To paint the plaster you may need:

  1. Roller. It has a different width, pile length and material. The size of the handle can be adjusted.
  2. Brushes. An important element that allows you to paint over the entire surface, as well as individual elements and hard to reach places.
  3. Paint sprayer. It allows you to save consumption and paint the plaster as quickly as possible in one color.

Different painting methods require different tools. It is also important to consider the type of surface and its structure. In addition, it is imperative to have at hand devices for grouting and leveling the surface. If doing work, if defects are noticeable, they can be quickly eliminated.

Wash Method

For structural surfaces, bleaching by blurring is suitable. It is relevant for internal work. To do this, you need to walk along the surface with a roller or brush with diluted water paint.

After drying, protruding areas are wiped with a sponge. As a result, the color remains intact in the recesses, and the relief elements will become lighter, which will create an original, discreet contrast, and help to place accents.

Single color

A universal option that is suitable for any type of plaster. You can perform painting with any devices. If a roller is used, it is necessary to paint with vertical movements, and remove excess paint or smudges formed with a brush. Such painting can be done with a roller with a long or short pile. The airbrush will allow to carry out the procedure as soon as possible.

If you use a brush, you will need to walk on the surface twice: vertically and horizontally. This will completely paint over all cavities and protruding parts.

Dry brush effect

Before proceeding to such staining, the entire surface should be treated by painting in one layer or tinting. Then the embossed parts should be painted over with a dry brush. The tone must be chosen lighter than the main one.

To give greater expressiveness brilliant compositions can be used. The essence of the procedure is that the brush remains almost dry, due to which only individual details are stained, and the main surface remains untouched.

Painting in several shades

Painting a plaster surface in two colors is also easy to do on its own. To do this, you need to walk along the entire wall with a roller or brush, ensuring uniform coloring. After that, a thin layer of paint is collected on the roller or sponge with light movements, without pressing only the protruding elements need to be processed.

You can use one color for this, while receiving different shades on the relief elements and the base, or use colors and achieve completely different colors.

Creating the effect of Venetian plaster

If you want to get a stylish effect of natural materials, you need to plaster the walls with textured compounds. After drying, its surface is treated with a long pile roller over the entire area. It is important to paint over the entire wall so that each recess and recess are covered with paint.

The paint for subsequent coating should be glossy. This will guarantee maximum natural effect. This paint must be treated protruding parts carefully, eliminating the appearance of stains. The final step will be coating the wall with acrylic varnish, which will give the surface a shimmer and radiance.

Painting Features

The application process itself will depend on the technology chosen. Regardless of the method of painting the plaster, it is important that all parts are carefully painted, both embossed and in-depth.

For the main painting, it is better to use a roller, sponges, brushes may also be needed. To paint the surface of a large area, it is better to purchase a spray gun.

When painting the plaster, make sure that the pile from the roller or brush does not remain on the surface. This may impair appearance. If the work is carried out on the street, then you need to choose the right time and weather conditions so that dust, debris, pollen particles do not stick to the facade until the paint dries.

Expert Advice

To achieve the highest quality result, professionals recommend:

  1. Do not paint the plaster at temperatures below + 5 ° C. The surface should be protected from moisture and sunlight before setting, as this may lead to stains.
  2. If the aqueous emulsion or acrylic composition has become thicker during storage, it can be diluted with water to the required consistency.
  3. Usually when adding color, the color in the container is brighter than on the surface, so it’s better to try the paint immediately in a small areato evaluate whether the color you get is what you need.
  4. It’s better to start painting plaster from difficult places, for example corners.
  5. If the walls are painted in different shades, then the border should be glued with a special masking tape to prevent surface contamination.

Observing the rules for painting plaster, you can get an attractive appearance of the walls, which will not only look beautiful, but also last a long time.

Output

Decorative plaster is a universal finishing option with which you can achieve a unique visual effect.

Using simple painting technologies, you can make your home stylish and modern with your own strengths. To do this, you need to choose a high-quality coloring composition and apply it to the surface of the walls, observing the recommendations of specialists.
